Welcome to November's edition of the Braeside Beacon, coming to you on this cool Halloween morning!
As we move through autumn towards winter, it's that magical time of year when your life transitions from 'light sweater' to 'where did I put that snow shovel?' But there's no need to hibernate just yet — November is packed with exciting things happening at the BCA.
Here's what's going on.

A Braeside Night of Frights and Fun! Our spook-tacular community Halloween celebration has wrapped up and it’s just about time to start saying goodbye to pumpkin spice (not the missing Spice Girl!) as we get ready to embrace the frosty chill of winter. Thank you to everyone who dressed up and joined in the festivities. The event may be packed away, but the fun and laughter from the night will keep us warm for a while yet.
This event wouldn't have been possible without the amazing volunteers from Youth Central and Servus Credit Union, along with generous donations from Shoppers Drug Mart, Woodbine Safeway, Oakridge Co-op, Superstore, and Oakridge Crossing Dental.

We wish you and all the little ones a fabulous Halloween night in the community this evening!
The Beautiful Braeside Calendar Competition has reached the voting stage and will soon head to print. A huge shout-out to everyone who sent in their incredible photos; we’ve got more natural beauty than you can shake a hockey stick at, and the photos prove it!
Now's your chance to play judge. Vote by November 5 and help decide which photos capture the heart of Braeside. Every vote counts, and you get to help decide which shot takes the coveted front cover spot!
Once the votes are in, we’d love for you to grab a calendar or two — not just for your wall but as the perfect holiday gift to spread the Braeside love. More on how the proceeds from this will be support community initiatives in our next edition.

Road Safety - Crosswalk on Braeside Drive close by Brae Centre

You may have seen social media posts about road safety at the crosswalk on Braeside Drive near 24 Street (you can find it on the Braeside Community Neighbours page). Board member Robert Grigg is taking the lead on addressing concerns at this crosswalk. You can reach him directly by emailing robert@braesideyyc.ca and please call 311 or use the app to share your feedback on concerns in the community.
Braeside's Proposed Development on Bradbury Drive has just been updated on DMap with revised design plans. Watch our Facebook page Friday, November 1st for more on this. You still have an opportunity to provide your feedback using the DMap portal for at least the next couple of weeks.
What is the Braeside Urban Ecosanctuary?

Our urban ecosanctuary project is about building a place of refuge for residents to get closer to nature by getting their hands dirty, or just walking through and pausing to feel a sense of peace and "ahh..." that makes our lives feel a little better.
We’re building bird houses to attract birds, native pollinator beds to attract bees, an orchard for fruit snacks, garden boxes and flower beds for gardeners and shade trees and benches for residents to gather, engage and enjoy it all. Maybe even a pocket forest.
Once finished, the sanctuary will double as a demonstration site for supplying information and ideas on what you can do to turn your yard in to your own sustainable space.
The committee meets about once a month through the fall to early spring, gathering ideas and making plans. If you are interested to hear more, have a skill you are aching to practice or just need to get out of the house to do some good and meet some of your neighbours, contact Jim at garden@braesideyyc.ca.
Councillor Kourtney Penner and the Ward 11 team invite you to a community conversation where they reflect on the past year and look ahead at what's to come. Get your tickets Ward 11 Community Conversation Tickets, Mon, Nov 4, 2024 at 6:30 PM | Eventbrite

The first part of the evening will be a moderated panel with community leaders Jim Jenkins of the Braeside Eco-Sanctuary & Community Garden, Julie Kearns of SW 55+ Connect, and Ryan Andersen of the Calgary Alliance for Common Good. They will be discussing their involvement and impact as leaders at the local level.
The second part of the evening will be a Q&A session with Councillor Penner moderated by Darren Krause of LiveWire Calgary.
Bring a donation to the food bank or winter clothing to be entered into a draw to win a door prize. Door prizes will be useful wares from local Ward 11 residents. This event is kid friendly - there will be a separate space in the foyer with children's appropriate activities and youth babysitters.

Enjoy a solid workout (goodbye, gym membership!): Winter in Braeside feels extra special when the rink comes to life — but snow doesn't clear itself! Join the Braeside Ice Guardians and help keep our rink in top shape this winter. From shoveling snow to serving hot chocolate at our concession stand, every bit helps create a gathering spot for families to connect.
Many of your neighbours are already signing and enjoying the simple satisfaction of contributing to the community. It’s rewarding and you'll feel proud knowing you're helping make Braeside a warmer, closer-knit place, even on the coldest days. Email rink@braesideyyc.ca or fill out this form.
If you don’t have time to volunteer, you can still make a difference by supporting our local Veterans Food Bank with non-perishable items. You can also contribute to community programs and events by donating bottles through Skip the Depot year-round.
Grounds & Room Rental at the BCA!

The Braeside Community Centre offers two halls for rent. The upper hall can host up to 240 people, while the lower hall can fit up to 100 in a classroom-style setup. Both spaces are ideal for a variety of events, such as birthday parties, music groups, choirs, and more. For more information on availability and rates, please contact us at: hallrental@braesideyyc.ca
Braeside Before and After School Care is taking part in a donation drive for the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society. They're collecting towels, blankets and sheets to support the animals in their care. If you have any items to donate, please bag them up, label them "AARCS," and bring them to the Braeside Community Center. Louise will ensure they are delivered to AARCS.
As part of this initiative, the children in the Braeside Childcare program will be helping to sort the items and learning about the importance of donating and volunteering, all while supporting the pets that AARCS cares for. Thank you for your generosity and support!
