Your Braeside Beacon (Aug 2024)

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Stampede event such a success. From the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to the enthusiastic attendees who showed up and made the day unforgettable, we couldn't have done it without you!

We're also grateful to our local supporters; Tim Hortons, KFC, Cove Soda, Circle K, Shoppers Drug Mart and Servus Credit Union for their kind and generous donations. We have many more exciting projects & events lined up throughout the year, and we need your help to make them just as amazing. If you’re interested in volunteering, please reach out to Operations@braesideyyc.ca

Behind the Scenes - Meet Braeside’s Volunteers

Jim - The Plant Whisperer
Jim - The Plant Whisperer

Jim and his family have been part of the Braeside community for 14 years, participating in numerous local events. With a passion for gardening sparked by his larger garden in Edmonton, Jim began renting a garden box behind the community centre. He soon saw the potential for something greater—a chance to enhance the local environment.

Jim proposed developing an urban ecosystem area, expecting the BCA Board to reject the idea. To his surprise, they loved it! Now, as a BCA board member, Jim leads this exciting initiative. His vision for this space goes beyond garden boxes. Together we are designing beds to attract pollinators, researching permaculture to rejuvenate natural plant species, building birdhouses, planting a fruit tree orchard, and working with the city to develop a small urban forest with gathering areas to sit and enjoy nature. This is just one piece of our bigger plan to improve our green spaces.

A note about the birdhouses in the Aspen Forest! They will be up until the end of September, so make sure to check them out :)

Youth Central & Braeside Board Members

Help Us Grow Our Garden Sanctuary: We're thankful for the amazing Youth Central volunteers and board members who stepped up to kickstart our garden sanctuary. Their energy and dedication have been invaluable, but there's still plenty of work left to do. We're always on the lookout for more hands to help lighten the load and bring our vision to life. If you're ready to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty, join us in creating a beautiful, peaceful space for our community to enjoy. Reach out to Jim at garden@braesideyyc.ca

We need your help to move dirt!! Just look at the amazing progress on our beautiful garden space behind the Community Centre! We are looking for volunteers to help us out on Saturday, August 3rd between 10am and 12pm. Bring a shovel to help Jim get the dirt evenly distributed across the garden beds for fall planting. Coffee, water & some snacks will be shared. Please reply to this message if you can give us a hand!

Where does your membership money go? It supports the operation and maintenance of the ice rink, building maintenance, BCA programs and services, and community events such as the Stampede BBQ, Halloween, Christmas, and Easter events. Members always enjoy free entrance to our events!

Supporting Youth & Teens in the Community

This summer, we've gathered several groups of teens to try out various activities they might enjoy. From drop-in soccer matches to helping with the community garden plots, there's a clear interest in making new friends and staying active. We plan to formalize these gatherings once school starts. If you have a teen aged 12-18 who's interested in getting involved, helping out, or just having fun, please send an email to president@braesideyyc.ca to be added to the list.

Get ready for "The Dog Days of Summer" on August 10: This pet-friendly family event, leading up to International Dog Day on August 26, is packed with fun activities. It has everything you need to celebrate our furry friends—enjoy a Bark & Brunch with hotdogs and treats, snap some pics at our photo booth, and let your pets show off in the Fur & Flair fashion contest. Plus, there's a marketplace and a social mixer to meet fellow dog lovers.

Thunderbirds Are Go!

Braeside is about to experience a real-life Thunderbirds adventure—minus the puppets! At our All Ford Show and Shine Car Fundraising Event, the only strings attached are the ones tugging at your heart as you admire these classic cars. Come see the Thunderbirds and other iconic Fords in action, where the engines roar and the nostalgia is real. Whether you're a die-hard Ford fan or just love cars, there's something for everyone. All proceeds support a worthy cause.

Fresh Food Fridays: Fresh Food Fridays have quickly become the go-to spot for picking up tasty treats on Friday, and all right within walking distance from your front door. Due to the long weekend and our Dog Days of Summer event, we've decided to take a pause. Fresh Food Friday's will welcome you back on August 16.

Ready to take a trip down memory lane? This autumn, the City of Calgary will open a special time capsule to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the International Year of Older Persons, and they need our help!

Back in 1999, Calgarians came together to create a friendship quilt and fill a time capsule with treasures, all to show our love and support for our older residents. As we look forward to October 1, 2024—the International Day of Older Persons—the City of Calgary wants to reconnect with the folks who made it all happen.

If you helped design, assemble, or contribute to the time capsule or friendship quilt, they’d love to hear from you! Share your experiences and reflections by emailing agefriendlycalgary@calgary.ca.
